Is Physalis lagascae toxic to humans?
Physalis lagascae can be toxic if ingested. Solanine, a toxic compound contained in the plant, can activate moderate or severe poisoning symptoms. Almost all parts of the plant are toxic, including the leaves, stems, flowers, and unripe fruits. However, the fruits are generally considered safe when ripe and sweet. If toxic parts of physalis lagascae are eaten in abundance, it can lead to diarrhea, stomach upset, nausea, headache, or even death. Most often, children or unaware foragers are in danger of ingesting the unripened berries after mistaking them for an edible food source.
