Is Meadow buttercup toxic to humans?

Meadow buttercup contains a toxic oil in the sap of its leaves and stem; poisoning is most likely to occur from handling the plant or accidentally ingesting it raw. Mild to moderate poisoning may occur if the leaves and stems are eaten raw, causing abdominal pain and irritation and blistering of the mouth and digestive tract. Contact with the sap from handling the plant can also cause an itchy, red skin rash called dermatitis. Meadow buttercup may be confused for other similar species, but all species in the Ranunculus genus are toxic.

Is Meadow buttercup toxic to cat?

The oils found within the entire meadow buttercup (Ranunculus acris) plant are moderately to severely toxic to cats that consume or even just chew the leaves. Typical symptoms of meadow buttercup poisoning include irritation or blisters on the mouth or throat, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea, vomiting, excessive salivation and a slight loss of coordination. Meadow buttercups are often found in flower arrangements, so use caution when selecting bouquets. Call your vet if your cat becomes very sick after being around any member of the buttercup family.

Is Meadow buttercup toxic to dog?

Meadow buttercup is mildly to moderately toxic to dogs. If a dog's skin is exposed to any damaged or crushed part of a buttercup (e.g. by rolling around in them), they may experience itching, blistering, or a rash. Ingesting any part of the plant leads to more serious symptoms. Symptoms of meadow buttercup poisoning are many and varied, and they include vomiting, diarrhea, a loss of appetite, excessive drooling, weakness, an uncoordinated or wobbly gate. Severe cases are unusual, as a lot of the plant needs to be ingested, but you should still look out for extreme symptoms such as spasms, paralysis, or a yellowing of the eyes and seek veterinary attention in these cases.
