Is Gooseberry toxic to humans?
Gooseberry berries aren't exactly dangerous unless you are allergic, though eating enough will cause diarrhea. Instead, it is the leaves, especially the young leaves, that are the problem. They contain hydrogen cyanide precursors, which are released when the leaves are exposed to stomach acid. Hydrogen cyanide is a toxic gas that absorbs through the mucus membranes and attacks the system. It quickly causes dizziness, headache, rapid heartbeat and breathing, vomiting, cherry-red lips, bluish skin, convulsions, irregular heartbeat, respiratory and heart failure, coma, and eventual death. Fence off any gooseberry plants in your yard and keep children away.
