Is Giant voodoo lily toxic to humans?
All parts of giant voodoo lily are moderately toxic due to their content of calcium oxalate crystals. If ingested, it can cause irritation to the lips, tongue, and throat, as well as gastrointestinal discomfort, vomiting, and diarrhoea. To give an example, these crystals have been said to feel like swallowing tiny shards of glass. However, if cooked or allowed to dry, this removes the toxic compounds from giant voodoo lily, but this must be done thoroughly and with sufficient care. There is also evidence to suggest that direct contact between this plant and the skin may result in dermatitis.
