Is Tung oil tree toxic to humans?
The tung oil tree is a highly toxic plant that may be fatal if eaten. All parts of the plant, but particularly seeds, are poisonous due to their high glycoside and phytotoxin concentrations. Reportedly, just a single seed can cause death if eaten. The most common symptoms of poisoning include severe gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and abdominal pain), difficulty breathing, profuse sweating, weakness, slow breathing, and poor reflexes. Skin irritation and rashes can occur upon contact with the plant, as its sap is poisonous as well. The clinical presentation of the tung oil tree poisoning is reported to be more serious in younger victims.
