Is Common cocklebur toxic to humans?
Poisoning from common cocklebur is most likely to occur from accidentally ingesting the plant. All parts of the young plant are toxic to humans when they are ingested, and the resulting poisoning can be fatal. In addition, the pollen in common cocklebur can cause skin irritation (red, itchy, inflamed skin where the contact occurred) in sensitive individuals from physical contact. Symptoms of poisoning from eating common cocklebur may include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, palpitations, sweating, and shortness of breath. Severe cases of poisoning can lead to convulsions, loss of consciousness, and even death.
