Broad-leaved gilia
It is an annual growing from 10 to 30 cm tall. Leaves are simple, leathery, and ovate to round, with toothed margins sometimes tinged with pink to red. Flowers have five sepals, five petals fused into a narrow, funnel-shaped, corolla tube. Its five stamens alternate with the lobes of the corolla. Flowers occur in a cluster at the end of the stems. The outside of the corolla is pale pink to tan, and the inside is pink to bright red, with stamens of unequal length that barely protrude past the corolla. Fruits are capsules with 3-compartments, each having many reddish-brown seeds.

Distribution of Broad-leaved gilia

Distribution Map
Broad-leaved gilia is predominantly found in its native range within the arid regions of North America. It thrives in specific ecosystems, where it has adapted over time to local climate and soil conditions. While it's primarily observed in its natural habitat, information regarding its introduction to other regions, if any, remains limited, suggesting broad-leaved gilia is not typically cultivated or widespread beyond its indigenous locations.

Care Guide for Broad-leaved gilia

Water: Broad-leaved gilia thrives in arid conditions, adapting to conserve water and showcasing drought tolerance. It requires moderate watering once weekly. Typically grown outdoors, broad-leaved gilia benefits from full sun exposure, which supports effective water management and aligns with its growth cycles.
Fertilize: For broad-leaved gilia, apply balanced fertilizers during the growing season and high-nitrogen formulas before flowering. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks, watering the soil beforehand. Reduce feeding as dormancy nears, and novice gardeners should use half-strength solutions to prevent over-fertilization.
Pruning: Broad-leaved gilia is a resilient desert plant with vibrant blooms. Prune in early to late spring to shape and remove dead growth, encouraging bushier growth and more flowers. Use sterile tools for pruning while avoiding excessive cuts, as broad-leaved gilia can be sensitive to over-pruning.
Propagation: To propagate broad-leaved gilia, sow seeds in well-draining soil, ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging. Sow seeds shallowly, as light aids germination. Once true leaves develop, transplant seedlings individually, minimizing root disturbance to enhance survival and promote robust root growth.
