Spikenard 'Sun King'
Also known as: Udo 'Sun King', Mountain asparagus 'Sun King'
Aralia cordata 'Sun King' was first spotted in a Japanese department store nursery by plant collector and photographer Barry Yinger, who brought it to the USA and named it spikenard 'Sun King' for its vibrant lime-green to yellow foliage. The flowers are white and tiny and produce deep-purple-to-black inedible berries. It was declared the 2020 Perennial of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association and is gaining a reputation as of one of the most exquisite new perennials of the last decade.

Water: Native to East Asian forest understories, spikenard 'Sun King' prefers humid, shaded conditions. Water twice a week to maintain even soil moisture while avoiding waterlogging. Often grown indoors for its vibrant foliage, spikenard 'Sun King' thrives in increased humidity, enhancing growth and appearance.
Fertilize: Spikenard 'Sun King' requires balanced nutrition fertilizer monthly during the growing season and a high nitrogen formula in early spring for optimal growth. Reduce fertilization in colder months and water thoroughly post-application. Monitor for over-fertilization signs to ensure healthy growth and development.
Pruning: Spikenard 'Sun King' is a perennial with vibrant yellow-green leaves. Prune in early spring to remove dead stems and promote growth; cut back leggy stems to the base. Regular pruning enhances air circulation and health, supporting its expansive growth and vibrant foliage display throughout the season.
Propagation: Spikenard 'Sun King' is a hardy perennial that prefers partial shade and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Propagation is through sowing seeds in containers with starter mix; keep moist until germination. Ensure adequate spacing for seedlings to promote airflow and prevent fungal diseases.
Repotting: Spikenard 'Sun King'' is a herbaceous perennial that can grow up to 6 feet. Repot every 2-3 years using a large, well-draining pot. After repotting, provide light watering and partial shade to promote recovery, as its large leaves require ample space for optimal growth.
