The pawpaws (Asimina) are a group of small, deciduous trees. Many species bear large, edible fruits, which are often simply referred to as pawpaws, or, sometimes, 'prairie bananas.' Though not often commercially cultivated, since their fruits are difficult to transport, pawpawss have been eaten throughout much of eastern North America for centuries. Several species are cultivated in gardens, as in addition to bearing tasty fruits, they sport a graceful form.
