Spleenwort belongs to a family of ferns distinguished by their feather-like, typically narrow fronds divided into numerous leaflets. These ferns thrive in moist, shaded habitats, often colonizing rocky substrates or tree crevices, which benefits their growth by providing a stable microenvironment. Spleenwort’s sori, or spore-producing structures, are linear and positioned along the underside of the leaflets, an identifying characteristic unique to this family.
