As of spring 2019 Plants of the World Online accepted 41 species. Species of atraphaxis are much branched woody plants forming shrubs or shrubby tufts. The leaves are simple and alternate with very short stalks (almost sessile). The inflorescence is made up of several bundles (fascicles) of one to three flowers. The flowers have persistent tepals either arranged in a narrow tube with unequal lobes or bell-shaped with equal segments. The fruits are wingless achenes.
Water:
Adapted to arid conditions, atraphaxis thrives with minimal moisture, requiring watering every 2-3 weeks, allowing soil to dry out. Best suited for outdoor cultivation, atraphaxis 's water needs vary seasonally, with less required during dormancy.
Propagation:
Propagation of atraphaxis involves seed sowing and softwood cuttings, requiring full sun, well-draining soil, and moderate conditions. Scarify seeds for better germination and maintain moisture for cuttings. Start in spring using healthy stems and rooting hormone; cover until roots develop.
