Aztekium valdezii is an endemic, tiny, star-shaped species of cactus - and quite a novel one. It was discovered only in 2011 by Mario Alberto Valdez Marroquín. In its natural habitat, it grows on gypsum and rock faces, often merged and unified with the rock. This species has a small range and the entire genus is highly sensitive due to frequent poaching and illegal trade.
