The cosmopolitan rattlesnake Fern genus only comprises only one species, Botrypus virginianum. This woodland dwelling genus flourishes in damp soil and deeply shaded areas. Botrypus virginianum is a low grower and is identified by its hairless triangular fronds or leaves. This species has both sterile and non-sterile fronds which are attached high on the stem.
