The cosmopolitan rattlesnake Fern genus only comprises only one species, Botrypus virginianum. This woodland dwelling genus flourishes in damp soil and deeply shaded areas. Botrypus virginianum is a low grower and is identified by its hairless triangular fronds or leaves. This species has both sterile and non-sterile fronds which are attached high on the stem.
Water:
Adapted to damp temperate forests, rattlesnake Fern prefers consistently moist soil and high humidity. Water twice a week, avoiding waterlogging. Ideal for indoor growth, rattlesnake Fern benefits from regular misting to maintain moisture levels, reflecting its natural habitat conditions.
Propagation:
Propagation of rattlesnake Fern primarily occurs through spores, requiring consistent moisture, indirect light, and well-draining, organic-rich soil. Ideal temperature is 16-21°C (60-70°F). Sterility is crucial to avoid fungal contamination. Collect spores, sow on sterilized peat-perlite mix, maintain humidity, and transplant sporophytes when ready.
