Candelariaceae is a family of fungi that grow as lichens, which are fascinating because they are formed by a host fungus and symbiotic algae or bacteria. This family was defined, or *circumscribed* to use the correct term, in 1954 by Finnish lichenologist Rainer Hakulinen. Candelariaceae fungi can be found in many everyday places, such as fenceposts, rocks, walls, trees, and pavement.
