Trumpet tree
Not to be confused with other species with the same common name, trumpet tree, or Cecropia obtusifolia, is native to Central America. Though its large, wavy leaves don't resemble trumpets in shape, they can be rolled up and used as makeshift trumpets - thus the name. A quick-growing tree that thrives in disturbed areas, the trumpet tree has become invasive throughout Hawaii.

Water: Trumpet tree prefers consistent moisture but is drought-tolerant once established. Water every 2-3 weeks, allowing soil to dry out to avoid overwatering. Thrives in well-draining soil, essential for proper hydration without waterlogging, and is typically grown outdoors due to its size.
Fertilize: For trumpet tree, fertilize bimonthly with balanced N:P:K fertilizer and quarterly with high-nitrogen feed during growth months. Adjust frequency with the seasons, using slow-release or liquid options. Always water trumpet tree before and after fertilization to avoid root burn and enhance nutrient absorption.
Pruning: Recognizable for its large, umbrella-like leaves, trumpet tree thrives with early spring pruning. Key techniques include removing dead branches, improving air circulation, and shaping for structure. Clean tools are essential to prevent infections. Regular pruning also controls size and promotes healthier growth, preventing disease.
Propagation: Trumpet tree propagation requires healthy seeds sown in well-draining soil with consistent moisture for germination. Conditions that replicate trumpet tree's natural habitat enhance growth success. Regular care and monitoring support strong establishment, allowing trumpet tree to thrive as a resilient part of any plant collection.
