Downy wood fern
Downy wood fern (Christella dentata) is a tropical fern that is widely distributed but in New Zealand, it is classified as At Risk - Naturally Uncommon. The Latin name dentata translates as toothed and refers to the tooth-like configuration of its fronds. This was the first fern to be recorded as naturalized in Hawaii in 1887 after being introduced by settlers.

Water: Downy wood fern thrives in moist environments and prefers evenly moist soil, requiring weekly watering. It benefits from rainwater, which supports its natural growth cycle and helps maintain its lush characteristics, highlighting its tolerance for humidity rather than drought conditions.
Fertilize: For optimal downy wood fern growth, use a balanced fertilizer monthly in spring and summer, halving the recommended dose to prevent root burn. In dormancy, feed every other month. Dilute fertilizer and water soil beforehand for better absorption, applying cautiously for novices while experienced users can adjust accordingly.
Pruning: Downy wood fern features finely divided fronds and thrives with early to late spring pruning. Removing dead fronds promotes healthy growth and airflow, while trimming boosts aesthetics and prevents disease, aligning with its active growth cycle for better recovery and overall health.
Propagation: Downy wood fern is propagated through division by segmenting its rhizomes, ensuring each piece has a healthy frond. These divisions should be replanted in a moisture-retentive, aerated mix. Proper care during establishment is crucial for successful root and foliage growth.
