Weed Control
Smooth crabgrass originates from Europe and is commonly known as a weed due its potency to spread rapidly and reproduce in a quick manner. The plant produces a hefty amount of seeds which are a source of its widespread. Furthermore, it has a robust root system which enables it to survive even under unfavorable conditions making its eradication difficult. Known for its aggressiveness, the plant can stunt the growth of other plants in its vicinity by competing for resources, causing significant harm to gardens. Lastly, the major contributing factor in smooth crabgrass spread is its ability to reproduce through seeds and the perseverant root system.
How to Control It
The best season for removal of smooth crabgrass is during the late spring and early summer, before the plant reaches its flowering stage and sets seeds. Here are the methods to control or remove this weed:
Hand Pulling: In the early stages of growth when the soil is wet, it's easier to pull smooth crabgrass out by hand. Ensure you pull out entire root to prevent the plant from regrowing.
Solarization: This method uses the sun's heat to kill the plant. Cover the area populated by smooth crabgrass with a clear plastic sheet and leave it there for 4-6 weeks. This will bake the plant and its seeds, making it easier to remove.
Mulching: Mulching prevents light from reaching smooth crabgrass which hinders its growth. Spread a 3-inch thick layer of organic mulch around your plants, leaving a little space around each plant's stem to prevent rot.
Vinegar Spray: In a spray bottle, mix one part of white vinegar with one part of water. Spray this mixture directly onto smooth crabgrass leaf surfaces. Be careful not to spray it on your desirable plants as vinegar is non-selective and can harm them.
Lawn Mowers: Mow regularly while smooth crabgrass is still in its vegetative state, and before it sets seed. This will exhaust the plant's energy reserves and prevent reproduction.
