The species in the genus dioon are perennial, evergreen cycads with cylindrical stem axis is partially in the ground. The plant is thickened and made of soft wood, rarely having above ground branches. Like other cycads, coral-like roots are sometimes formed that grow up from the primary root and branch out quickly just below the soil surface. The individual roots are thickened rhizomes. The leaves are pinnate, spirally arranged, interspersed with cataphylls, with leaflets not articulated and lacking a midrib. The seeds are spherical, ovate or ellipsoidal. It is native to Mexico and Central America.
Water:
Adapted to dry conditions, dioon exhibits excellent drought tolerance, requiring watering every two weeks. It thrives in drier environments, efficiently managing water storage. Primarily grown outdoors, dioon is suited for regions with seasonal rainfall patterns, emphasizing the importance of water conservation.
Propagation:
Primary propagation for dioon involves seed collection or division of offsets. Key requirements include bright light, well-draining soil, and warm temperatures (21-24°C). Care should be taken to mature seed cones on the plant. Seed sowing and offset division are best done in spring or early summer.
