Velvet apple
Also known as: Persimmon
Velvet apple is a tropical fruit tree known for its large, glossy green leaves and round yellow-orange fruits that bear a sweet, custard-like flesh. The bark is smooth and dark, contrasting the dense canopy that flourishes in warm climates. Velvet apple thrives in well-drained soils and often attracts wildlife, which helps in seed dispersal.

Water: Velvet apple thrives in humid regions, preferring consistent moisture but tolerating short dryness. Water every 2-3 weeks, allowing soil to dry slightly. As an evergreen, its thick foliage aids in water retention, minimizing loss and maintaining hydration across varying temperatures.
Fertilize: For velvet apple, use a base fertilizer primarily from decomposed organic sources, balancing with phosphorus and potassium. Apply nitrogen during new branch growth and a mix during fruit swelling. Foliar feeding with diluted urea and monopotassium phosphate is recommended during growth stages for optimal results.
Pruning: Pruning velvet apple is optimal in late winter while dormant, focusing on thinning and removing dead or misaligned branches. A central leader system is preferred for training, cutting back the leader by a third. Utilizing a trellis supports growth without needing extensive pruning.
Propagation: Grafting of velvet apple should occur when the rootstock germinates in spring. After grafting, promptly remove new buds and water regularly during rapid growth. Late summer requires reduced fertilizer and water. Fall necessitates 2-3 foliar applications of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to prevent spindling, and top buds should be removed in frost-prone areas.
