Also known as: Alaska variegated horsetail, Variegated scouring-rush
Branched horsetail (Equisetum variegatum) is an herbaceous plant native to cooler parts of Europe, Asia, and North America, mostly in moist habitats. All vegetative parts of the plant contain thiaminase which blocks B vitamins in the body, thus it is toxic when consumed in large quantities. It reproduces by spores, and like all species of this ancient family, it represents a "living fossil."

Water:
Branched horsetail thrives in moist environments, requiring consistent hydration and weekly watering to prevent dry periods. As a species from wetlands, it benefits from high humidity and moist soil, especially during active growth phases for optimal health.
Fertilize:
Regular fertilization of branched horsetail with balanced nutrition every 4 weeks during the growing season, using half the recommended dosage, supports healthy growth. Reduce feeding in dormancy to avoid nutrient overload, while ensuring proper water balance to prevent root damage and enhance vitality.
Pruning:
Branched horsetail features jointed stems needing minimal pruning. Conduct pruning in early spring to remove dead parts and support new growth. Thinning controls spread and maintains tidiness, while clean tools prevent damage and encourage healing.
Propagation:
Branched horsetail, from the Equisetaceae family, features jointed, hollow stems and scale-like leaves. It propagates through division of rhizomes, ensuring each section includes roots and a shoot. Plant in moist, well-draining soil to replicate its natural damp habitats for optimal growth and establishment.
Repotting:
Branched horsetail, a perennial ground cover, should be repotted every 2-3 years in spring to give its rhizomatous roots room to grow. Use a wide, shallow container, and provide moist soil and partial shade post-repotting to ensure recovery and thriving without stress.
