Strawberry
Fragaria × bringhurstii is pentaploid, having 5 pairs of these chromosomes for a total of 35 chromosomes, 7 from the F. vesca parent, and 28 from the F. chiloensis parent. Because of this odd number of chromosomes, this species possesses only limited fertility, due to problems of chromosome pairing during meiosis. However the plants readily reproduce vegetatively through runnering.

Water: Strawberry thrives in moisture-rich soil and requires consistent hydration for optimal growth. While moderately drought-tolerant, it benefits from weekly watering and well-drained conditions. Mulching is beneficial, helping retain moisture and reducing watering frequency.
Fertilize: Strawberry benefits from balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer applied monthly during growth, reducing in winter. Use half-strength for young plants. Avoid over-fertilizing to protect roots. Water the soil before fertilizing to enhance nutrient absorption, adjusting application based on seasonal growth stages.
Pruning: The low-growing perennial herbaceous plant strawberry produces juicy red fruits and requires regular pruning in early to late spring. Prune to remove old leaves, thin crowded areas, and trim runners, promoting air circulation, reducing disease, and boosting yield. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
Propagation: Strawberry is propagated by sowing seeds in well-draining soil trays. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged for optimal germination. After developing true leaves, seedlings can be transplanted into pots or gardens. Regular watering and temperature protection ensure healthy growth.
