California ash is a deciduous shrub or small tree characterized by its two-winged samaras and fragrant clusters of small white flowers. Water: Water california ash daily after planting to promote root growth, then weekly once established. Increase watering in dry, vigorous summer conditions. Water once before winter freeze and cease thereafter. Avoid overwatering to prevent soil waterlogging and root rot.
Fertilize: California ash thrives in infertile soil, but requires nutrients for optimal growth and pest resistance. Use a 10:10:10 slow-release fertilizer once each fall, ensuring adequate watering. Fertilize new spring plantings in late summer, and fall plantings the following spring to avoid root burn.
Pruning: California ash thrives with early spring pruning, removing dead or crossing branches to improve health and shape. Prioritize thin stems for better air circulation. This practice promotes vigorous growth, flowering, and pest resistance. Use clean, sharp tools, and seek local advice for optimal results.
Propagation: California ash trees can be propagated by seed or cuttings. For cuttings, take 15 cm branches with 3-4 buds in spring/summer and root them in moist sandy soil. Sowing is complex; if attempted, plant seeds 1.3 cm deep in spring, refrigerate for three months, then germinate at 21-24°C, keeping soil moist.
