Gaultheria hispida is a small, erect multi-branched shrub, in the family Ericaceae. G. hispida can grow up to 2 m in a protected site, such as a forest, but will be smaller in more exposed alpine sites. Its leaves grow to be 4 to 9 cm long and appear dark green and glossy, with depressed veins and finely serrated leaf margins, tinged copper.

Water: Waxberry prefers consistently moist soil and moderate humidity, reflecting its native forest understory. Water weekly and place in humid environments or use pebble trays for better moisture retention, making it ideal for indoor cultivation.
Pruning: Waxberry features evergreen leaves and aromatic berries. For best results, prune in early to late winter, removing weak stems for healthier growth and better air flow. Thinning improves light access and disease resistance. Prune post-flowering to maintain shape and promote blooms, using sharp, sterile tools.
Propagation: Propagating waxberry requires sowing seeds in well-draining potting mix with consistent moisture. Seed stratification enhances germination, and warmth aids growth. Transplant seedlings with true leaves to a dappled sunlight area, ensuring gentle handling to prevent root damage.
