Hyophorbe is a genus of five known species of flowering plants in the family Arecaceae, native to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. All five species can attain heights of over 6 m, and two of the species develop swollen trunks that have made them popular as ornamentals.
Water:
Hyophorbe thrives in consistently moist soil and exhibits moderate drought tolerance, requiring watering every two weeks. It is sensitive to overwatering during dormancy, making soil moisture monitoring essential. Primarily cultivated outdoors, hyophorbe reflects its tropical origins with a need for balanced moisture.
Propagation:
Propagation of hyophorbe involves seed sowing and offshoot division, requiring warm temperatures (85-95°F / 29-35°C), high humidity, and well-draining soil. Seeds may be rare, and growth is slow. Soak seeds before planting in a sand-peat mix, and replant offshoots during active growth.
