Water: Water requirements for irises 'Rajah' differ significantly. Bearded irises 'Rajah' needs minimal water and should be watered only when the soil is dry, whereas Siberian irises 'Rajah' requires consistently moist soil. Most irises 'Rajah' species are intolerant of standing water and can suffer root rot in poorly-drained conditions.
Fertilize: Irises 'Rajah' thrives in humus-rich soil. Fertilize early spring, early fall, and pre-bloom with phosphorus-rich fertilizers (e.g., 5-10-5 NPK) to enhance flowering. Balanced options (20-20-20 NPK) work too. Water immediately after fertilizing to aid nutrient absorption.
Pruning: Irises 'Rajah' has tall, sword-like leaves and vibrant flowers. Prune in early to late spring by cutting back faded stalks and damaged leaves. Remove diseased parts, deadhead blooms for prolonged flowering, and use sterilized tools to prevent infection. Pruning promotes shape and air circulation.
Propagation: Avoid propagating irises 'Rajah' by seeding due to potential changes in flower characteristics. Instead, divide the plant 2-3 months post-bloom using a sharp knife, ensuring each piece has a 15 cm-long rhizome. Trim old parts and space plants 30 cm apart (15 cm for dwarf varieties).
