Rhatany is the only genus in the Krameriaceae family, of which any of the approximately 18 species. Rhatany are found across the Americas, with most native to the tropical regions. They are perennial shrubs which act as root parasites on other plants.
Water:
Rhatany, adapted from arid environments, exhibits excellent drought tolerance and thrives on minimal watering, about once every 2-3 weeks. It prefers well-draining soil to replicate its natural habitat and aligns its growth cycle with the sparse rainfall of its native climate.
Propagation:
Rhatany propagation involves seed sowing or root cuttings, requiring adequate light, temperature, and well-draining soil. Key steps include seed treatment (scarification/stratification), sowing in moist soil, and careful handling of root cuttings during dormancy. Difficulty is moderate due to seed dormancy and root care needs.
