Tall Fescue
Also known as: Kentucky Fescue
Tall Fescue (Lolium arundinaceum) is a perennial grass that grows 61 to 122 cm high. Many people consider it an invasive species because it causes ecological problems in woodlands, savannas, and grasslands. This species is native to Eurasia and was brought over by early colonists for livestock grazing.

Toxicity

Tall Fescue is toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion of any part, including leaves, stems, or seeds, can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, or seizures. Immediate veterinary care is crucial if an animal exhibits signs of tall Fescue poisoning to prevent severe complications and ensure swift recovery.

Weed Control

Tall Fescue is native to Europe and northern Africa. It has been introduced almost worldwide for turf, forage, and erosion control. However, it is listed as invasive by several states across the United States. Its seeds are long-lived and can be dispersed widely as they are transported by livestock and birds. This allows it to establish readily in its preferred conditions, typically disturbed sites such as highways and railroads. Once established, it can spread aggressively via rhizomes. It is often infected with a specific fungus that can harm grazing animals. Tall Fescue can be managed by burning, plowing, planting competitive cover crops, and herbicide applications.
How to Control It
The optimal period for dealing with tall Fescue is in the early stages of growth, preferably in the spring before it sets seed. During this time, unwanted tall Fescue is easier to manage or eliminate.
  1. Manual removal: Pull young tall Fescue plants from the ground, ensuring to remove the entire root system to prevent regrowth.
  2. Mulching: Lay a thick layer of organic material like wood chips or straw around desired plants to suppress tall Fescue seed germination and growth.
  3. Mowing: Frequently mow the area where tall Fescue is growing to prevent it from reaching maturity and setting seeds. Adjust the mower to a high setting to protect the turf but restrict tall Fescue height.
  4. Dense planting: Plant desirable species densely to outcompete tall Fescue for light, space, and nutrients.
  5. Water control: Since tall Fescue is drought-tolerant, ensure regular irrigation to favor the growth of less hardy plants that may outcompete tall Fescue.

Water: Tall Fescue thrives in moderate moisture, requiring watering twice a week for optimal health. It is primarily an outdoor plant, well-suited for temperate climates, allowing it to regulate its water needs effectively throughout the growing season.
Fertilize: Tall Fescue thrives with a balanced nitrogen-rich fertilizer applied in spring and late summer. Use 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet to promote growth while avoiding over-fertilization. Employ a slow-release formula, and ensure thorough watering post-application for optimal nutrient absorption.
Pruning: Tall Fescue thrives with regular pruning, including mowing at 7.5-10 cm (3-4 inches) and removing dead or diseased stems. Optimal pruning occurs from early to late spring, improving air circulation and minimizing disease risks, promoting vigorous growth for a lush landscape.
Propagation: Tall Fescue propagates optimally through division in spring or autumn. It is moderately easy to propagate, with success indicated by new, healthy growth. Providing adequate moisture and root space is crucial for achieving optimal propagation results.
