The Brooklyn Botanic Garden first showed off the hybrid in 1981, after crossing M. acuminata var. subcordata with M. x brooklynensis 'Evamaria'. In late spring, the conical or pyramidal shrub or tree displays tulip-like, lemon-yellow flowers that measure 7 cm across. The leaves turn golden-brown in the fall.

Water: Originating from moderately moist regions, cucumbertree 'Yellow Bird' prefers consistent soil moisture without excess watering. Watering twice weekly is recommended. As an outdoor plant, mulching is beneficial for moisture retention and temperature regulation, crucial for its growth and health.
Fertilize: Fertilize cucumbertree 'Yellow Bird' with balanced nutritional fertilizer in spring, switching to high-nitrogen every 4-6 weeks until late summer. Reduce for mature trees and avoid over-fertilization. Seasonal variations require adjustments, with slow-release granules or liquid formulations for optimal absorption.
Pruning: Cucumbertree 'Yellow Bird' features vibrant yellow flowers. Prune in early spring to shape, remove dead branches, and encourage healthy growth. Thinning dense areas enhances air circulation and flowering, while clean cuts above healthy buds promote vitality and control size.
Propagation: Cucumbertree 'Yellow Bird' is valued for its vibrant yellow flowers. Propagation involves semi-hardwood cuttings from healthy non-flowering shoots, using rooting hormone in well-draining medium. Maintain consistent moisture and warmth for root establishment, which may take several weeks.
