There are four species, one native to the Mediterranean, and three native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. These are generally perennial herbs, sometimes annual, growing in a prostrate or decumbent form. They are coated with star-shaped or scaly hairs. The silvery-haired leaves have asymmetrical blades. Flowers are whitish or yellow, fading pink. The fruit is a capsule with 7 to 10 segments that do not break apart.
Water:
Malvella thrives with moderate hydration, preferring weekly watering to balance drought resistance and moisture needs. It benefits from well-draining soil to avoid waterlogging, especially during heavy rains, reflecting its adaptation to environments with periodic moisture.
Propagation:
Propagation of malvella can be achieved through seed sowing or cuttings, requiring optimal light, warmth, and well-draining soil. Techniques include seed pre-treatment and using healthy stem cuttings in spring/summer, coated in rooting hormone, planted in peat and perlite, kept moist with indirect light until roots form.
