Nardus stricta, or matgrass (named after its vigorous growth habit), is the sole species of the Nardus genus. This slow-growing, grass-like herb occurs in infertile and poor soils and tends to outcompete desirable grasses when grown outside of its native region. As an asexual species, entire colonies tend to actually be numerous clones of a single plant.
Water:
Matgrass flourishes in consistently moist conditions, requiring weekly watering to stay healthy. While moderately drought-tolerant, it benefits from natural rainfall during the growing season, which supports its growth cycles and lessens the need for additional watering.
