Water dropwort
Also known as: Hemlock water dropwort, Dropwater, Belder-root
Water dropwort, or Oenanthe crocata, resembles a celery plant, with large, carrot-like white roots. However, this plant is extremely poisonous to people and animals. One root has enough toxin to kill a cow. It grows in wet, swampy areas.

Weed Control

Water dropwort is native to Europe and North Africa, particularly prevalent in Western Europe. This plant is deemed as a weed because of its rapid and prolific growth habit. It reproduces from seeds that germinate and grow quickly, and can spread via water due to its aquatic nature. It can rapidly take over waterways, reducing biodiversity and disrupting ecosystems. What makes it particularly harmful is its high toxicity. All parts of the plant are poisonous, especially the roots, which contain a strong neurotoxin that can be harmful, even fatal, to humans and livestock. Thus, its presence in gardens or pastures is a serious concern. The main method of dispersal for this weed is through water bodies and its seeds can be carried downstream, establishing in new areas swiftly.
How to Control It
The ideal period for removal of water dropwort is during the late spring or early summer, before the plant has a chance to flower and disperse its seeds. Here are some methods you can employ for controlling this plant:
  1. Hand Pulling: This is a straightforward method for non-established plants. Roots should be dug from the ground, ensuring no parts are left behind as they can regrow.
  2. Mowing: Keeping the area mowed low regularly can prevent the plant from going to seed. This method is more effective during the growing season where multiple cuts can greatly weaken the plant.
  3. Smothering: A layer of organic matter such as compost or mulch can smother small water dropwort infestations. Spread the material uniformly over the area and check it regularly to ensure new sprouts aren't pushing through.
  4. Plant Competition: Planting native species that compete for the same resources can reduce water dropwort's ability to thrive. Select plants that grow densely and dominate the area quickly.
  5. Grazing: Certain animals like sheep or goats can effectively control the plant by consuming it regularly. Just be sure to supervise the animals as some parts of water dropwort are toxic.

Water: Water dropwort thrives in wet conditions and prefers consistent moisture, indicating a need for regular watering—ideally weekly. As an aquatic perennial, it suits outdoor settings, leveraging seasonal rainfall. Its growth cycle aligns with water availability, flourishing when adequately hydrated.
Repotting: Spring is the best time to repot water dropwort, a water-loving marsh plant. Repot every 2-3 years in a spacious container with well-draining, loamy soil. After repotting, provide plenty of water and avoid full sun to support water dropwort's adjustment.
