There is just one species in the genus ironwood, Olneya tesota. This is a medium-sized tree that is noted for its particularly hard timber, which is so dense that it doesn't float in water. The wood is excellent for wood-carving. This tree is typically found in the Sonoran desert region.
Water:
Ironwood excels in arid conditions, exhibiting exceptional drought tolerance. Water sparingly, every 2-3 weeks, to replicate its natural habitat. Its water storage ability makes ironwood ideal for xeriscaping and low-water garden designs.
Propagation:
Propagation of ironwood primarily utilizes seed sowing, as cuttings often fail to root. Germination is aided by scarification to soften the hard seed coat. Key steps include using well-draining soil, maintaining warm temperatures, and careful transplantation to protect the taproot.
