Paxillaceae is a family of mushroom-like fungi. A distinguishing feature of the species in this family is recurrent gills. Recurrent means *extending lengthwise down the stem* and describes the way that these gills continue down the mushroom's stem. This family also goes by the name *gyrodonaceae*, given to it in 1951 by the Belgian botanist Paul Heinemann.
Paxillaceae is a highly poisonous mushroom that can be fatal if consumed. All parts are toxic, especially raw or improperly cooked. Early symptoms include gastric upsets. Long-term consumption can lead to extreme allergic reactions, haemolytic anaemia, liver failure, and kidney damage.
