Sandpaper plant
Also known as: Common sandpaper plant
It is a rounded or spreading, clumpy subshrub made up of many rough-haired stems approaching 1 m in maximum height. The stems are lined with clasping leaves varying in shape from lance-shaped to triangular to oval and sometimes toothed. The inflorescence at the end of the stem is a small, crowded raceme of several flowers. The white flower appears tubular, its petals fused near the spreading tips but open lower, the stamens emerging from outside the corolla.

Water: Originating from arid environments, sandpaper plant thrives with minimal moisture and high drought tolerance. Water sandpaper plant every 2-3 weeks, as it prefers drier conditions and well-draining soil to prevent root rot, making it better suited for outdoor growth with natural rainfall.
Fertilize: For optimal health, sandpaper plant needs balanced and high nitrogen fertilizers during peak growth, applied monthly in spring and summer, then bi-monthly or quarterly in fall and winter. Water thoroughly after fertilization to enhance nutrient absorption, promoting stronger roots, healthier foliage, and better pest resistance.
Pruning: Sandpaper plant features sandpaper-like leaves and thrives with early spring pruning. Remove dead, diseased, or overcrowded branches to enhance air circulation and light penetration, promoting healthy growth and flowering. Pruning aligns with its growth cycle, minimizing stress and aiding recovery.
Propagation: Sandpaper plant, native to desert climates, thrives in arid conditions. Propagation is achieved through sowing in well-draining soil, mimicking its sandy habitat. Seeds should be lightly covered, with moisture carefully balanced to avoid rot. Variable germination times require patience.
