Also known as: Сanary grass, Shortspike canarygrass
Annual canarygrass (*Phalaris canariensis*) is a grain that’s indigenous to the Mediterranean region. People all over the world use it for birdseed—hence the name. In Mexico, it’s been traditionally used to make atole, a hot beverage of Mesoamerican origin. However, the seed hulls are full of silica fibers, which have been linked to esophageal cancer.

Weed Control
Annual canarygrass is a leafy annual grass that is widely considered a weed of crop fields, pastures, roadsides and disturbed areas.
How to Control It
Pulling young plants and seedlings during spring (in the garden) and regular soil cultivation (in crop fields) is the easiest way to deal with annual canarygrass. Ploughing in autumn combined with herbicide application can be also very effective. If you opt for herbicides, consult an agricultural expert to find the best active substance for your climate and geographical area. Always read the instructions on the label and follow them carefully. Spray on a windless day to avoid drift and negative effects on non-target species.

Water:
Annual canarygrass thrives with moderate moisture, preferring weekly watering to mimic its native steady rainfall. As an annual grass, it needs careful hydration during its growing season for robust development, typically in outdoor cultivation.
Pruning:
Annual canarygrass is an ornamental grass valued for its tufted growth and unique seed heads. Prune in early to late spring, trim dead stems, and thin periodically for air circulation. Cut back after blooming to enhance next season's flowering, promoting healthy growth and longevity.
Propagation:
To propagate annual canarygrass, sow seeds in a well-draining soil mix, ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging. Maintain optimal temperatures for germination, and cover lightly with soil or vermiculite. Thin seedlings for stronger growth, but be cautious, as annual canarygrass can become invasive in favorable climates.
