Silkgrasses are a genus of silkgrasses. Their Latin name, Pityopsis, means 'pine' and refers to the mythical figure Pitys who was turned into a pine tree. Native to North America, they are grown for their showy flowers and foliage in wildflower gardens where they can even be kept as a groundcover.
Water:
Silkgrasses prefers well-drained soils and moderate humidity, needing consistent moisture with weekly watering. It tolerates brief dry spells and adjustments based on seasonal rainfall are essential, especially when grown outdoors, to meet its hydration requirements.
Propagation:
Propagate silkgrasses via seed sowing, division, or basal cuttings. Ensure full sun, well-drained sandy soils, and maintain around 21°C (70°F). For seeds, cold stratify for 4 weeks; for division, separate clumps in spring; for cuttings, use 4-inch basal growth in gritty compost.
