The unique trait of haircap mosses is the outgrowth of star-shaped hairs that arise from each stem. This furry appearance is how the genus got the name haircap moss. It was supposedly originally named after the Norse goddess Sif, as it was believed these were hairs from her head. There are around 70 total species of haircap mosses.
Propagation:
Propagation of haircap mosses primarily occurs through spores and division, needing moisture, light, and an acidic, well-draining substrate. Division is easier; care is needed to not damage haircap mosses. Separate clumps with stems and rhizoids, plant shallowly in moist substrate, and mist regularly to maintain humidity.
