Protium is a genus of more than 140 species of flowering plants in the family Burseraceae. It is native to the Neotropics (where around 175 species have been found), Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and southern Asia from Pakistan east to Vietnam. The species are usually small or medium-sized trees, but some can be large, up to 35 m tall.
Water:
Originating from arid regions, protium is drought-tolerant and minimizes its watering needs, thriving on a deep soak every 2-3 weeks. Its root system efficiently absorbs moisture during rare rainfall, making it ideal for xeriscaping or rock gardens focused on water conservation.
Propagation:
Propagation of protium can be achieved through seeds or stem cuttings. Important factors include warm temperatures, high humidity, indirect light, and well-draining soil. Pre-treat seeds for better germination and use rooting hormones for cuttings. Maintain consistent conditions until rooted, then transplant.
