Rues (Ruta) are known to have a strong scent and are a genus of evergreen subshrubs. Ruta graveolens is the most well-known of the accepted species and is commonly used as a small garden shrub. The leaves usually have a feathery look and can appear blue-green in color with yellow flowers. Although their toxicity is known, and can cause blistering skin rashes for some, leaves of rues have been used as a wine additive in Europe for centuries.
Water:
Rues, native to the Mediterranean, thrives in well-drained soil and tolerates moderate drought. Weekly watering is adequate for its health. This outdoor plant prefers full sun, with its growth cycle and flowering periods primarily influenced by water availability.
Propagation:
Propagation of rues can be achieved via seeds, stem cuttings, or division. Success relies on full sun, well-drained soil, and moderate temperatures. For cuttings, use healthy stems, cut 4-6 inches, and create a humid environment. Rooting takes 2-4 weeks in indirect light.
