Water:
Purple sage, native to arid California, exhibits exceptional drought tolerance. It requires weekly watering and thrives better under drier conditions. Best grown outdoors, purple sage needs well-draining soil to prevent root rot, as it is sensitive to waterlogged environments.
Fertilize:
Nourish purple sage with balanced fertilizers biannually in spring and autumn at half-strength to enhance resilience and root health. Feed more during growth for vibrant foliage. Water before fertilization, and adjust care seasonally to prevent nutrient build-up for optimal health and flowering.
Pruning:
Purple sage features silvery leaves and purple flowers. Prune one-third in late spring to shape and remove damage. Light pruning promotes denser growth and air circulation, keeping purple sage healthy. Avoid heavy pruning in winter to prevent frost damage.
Propagation:
Purple sage, native to Southern California, thrives in dry conditions with aromatic foliage and purplish-pink flowers. Propagate via sowing in well-draining soil, maintaining moisture without waterlogging. Use fresh seeds and sterile mediums, with gentle handling to support healthy seedling development.
Repotting:
Repot purple sage every 2-3 years in spring using a pot 2 inches (5 cm) larger. After repotting, provide direct sunlight and moderate watering, ensuring well-draining soil for the plant’s health. While hardy, following these care steps enhances establishment and growth.
