At the same time, it was noted that European and Australian specimens ascribed to this species are in fact different taxa; for example, all Australian specimens studied were tetraploid, whereas all European specimens studied were diploid. Therefore the Australian specimens were segregated into a new species, Schenkia australis.

Water:
Spiked centaury is moderately drought-tolerant, thriving with consistent, well-drained moisture. Watering twice a week keeps the soil moist. Its efficient root system captures rainwater in open grasslands, enhancing its water economy during dry spells.
Pruning:
Spiked centaury has slender stems and bright pink flowers, thriving in well-drained soils. Prune in early to late spring to promote growth, removing dead stems and encouraging bushiness. Light pruning enhances air circulation, reducing disease risk and ensuring robust flowering and longevity.
Propagation:
Spiked centaury thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Propagate by sowing seeds in sterilized mix, pressing them lightly as they need light to germinate. Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging, ensuring adequate spacing of seedlings before transplanting to minimize root disturbance.
