The seepweeds genus contains over a hundred species of halophytic (salt-loving) plants mostly found in coastal salt flats and saline wetlands. They are characterized by succulent leaves, an adaptation to their high-salt environment. In the Middle Ages seepweeds were gathered and burned to obtain ashes for use in the glass-making process.
