Erect hedgeparsley
Also known as: Japanese hedge parsley
Native to Eurasia, erect hedgeparsley has been introduced in North America in 1917. Since then, it has been considered invasive in non-native habitats. Distribution of Erect hedgeparsley

Distribution Map
Erect hedgeparsley is a plant with a broad ecological footprint. Native to East Asia and parts of Europe, it thrives in temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere. Over time, erect hedgeparsley has been introduced to various other temperate zones around the world. It is now firmly established in many areas outside its native range, having naturalized across several continents in both hemispheres.

Weed Control

Erect hedgeparsley originated from Eastern Asia but has since spread globally. This plant is classified as a weed primarily because of its aggressive and invasive nature, which enables it to conquer and dominate various types of environments, outcompeting native species. Its seeds are small and adhesive, maximizing their dispersal potential. These seeds latch onto animals, people, and even machinery, allowing them to spread great distances. Furthermore, erect hedgeparsley is a highly resilient species, with the capacity to thrive in varying climatic conditions and soil types, which contributes greatly to its weedy status. The plant’s hardiness and rapid growth allow it to quickly take over garden grounds if not properly managed. It's capable of crowding out more desirable plant species, thus devastating the biodiversity of the garden. Because of its ability to reproduce and spread quickly, erect hedgeparsley can be particularly harmful to gardens and landscapes.
How to Control It
The ideal season for the removal of erect hedgeparsley is during the late spring and early summer, before it produces a lot of seed. This is crucial as it can prevent further seed dispersion, which can lead to infestations.
  1. Hand Pulling: Wet the soil around erect hedgeparsley, provide a firm grip at the base of the plant, and pull upwards to extract it from the ground.
  2. Hoeing: Use a garden hoe to cut the plants at ground level. Do this several times in the growing season to reduce seed production.
  3. Smothering: Cover the infested area with thick layers of newspaper or cardboard and top it with a generous layer of compost or mulch to smother erect hedgeparsley.
  4. Solarization: Cover the affected area with a thick, transparent plastic sheet during the peak summer months. The sun's heat will penetrate the plastic and kill erect hedgeparsley.
  5. Biological Control: Introduce insects or animals, like goats, that feed on erect hedgeparsley. These bio-controls can help minimize the growth of the plant.
