Toad lily
Also known as: Japanese toad lily
With blooms that look like a cross between an orchid and a standard lily, the toad lily is a welcome garden addition because they bloom later in the summer, with their striking flowers lasting well into the fall. The name comes from a fake story about indigenous peoples that would rub the sticky sap on their hands before going to catch frogs; the scent would attract them and the stickiness would help the hunter catch them.

Water: Originating from Asia's humid woodlands, toad lily thrives in consistently moist environments. Regular weekly watering supports its growth. As an herbaceous perennial, it benefits from natural rainfall during its active growing season, enhancing its floral display.
Fertilize: For toad lily, apply balanced nutrition fertilizers with equal NPK values in spring and summer. Switch to high phosphorus during flowering. Fertilize monthly, adjusting to every 6-8 weeks in fall/winter. Water thoroughly before and after fertilization, and monitor for signs of over-fertilization.
Pruning: Pruning toad lily in early to mid-spring encourages healthier growth and flowering. Remove dead or damaged stems and thin excessive growth for better air circulation while keeping the plant's shape. Proper pruning prevents diseases and pests, ensuring a robust, visually appealing plant.
Propagation: Toad lily propagates through sowing fresh seeds post-bloom on well-draining soil. Maintain consistent moisture in a warm, humid environment, possibly covering with plastic. After germination, transplant seedlings into individual pots for growth in partial shade until ready for the garden.
Repotting: Toad lily thrives in partial shade and moist soil. Repot every 2-3 years in spring using a slightly larger container with good drainage. After repotting, ensure consistent moisture and avoid direct sunlight for healthy growth and flowering.
