Water:
Purpletop vervain requires consistent watering during spring and summer, reducing in fall and winter. Check daily in hot weather; if soil is dry or the plant wilts, it's time to water. Water at the base in the morning to prevent damage to delicate petals.
Fertilize:
To maintain a vibrant purpletop vervain, apply organic water-soluble fertilizer directly to the soil, avoiding contact with leaves. Feed purpletop vervain twice monthly in spring and summer, with an option for monthly feeding in fall and winter for optimal growth.
Pruning:
Purpletop vervain ranges from 10cm-140cm in height and can spread up to 2m wide. It blooms from early summer to mid-winter. Prune monthly in summer and twice each season otherwise, trimming back 1-2 inches to maintain shape and encourage blooms. Avoid removing over a third of the plant.
Propagation:
You can propagate purpletop vervain from cuttings in spring or seeds, which may take up to 90 days to flower. Plant seeds in 2 inches of soil indoors about 10 weeks before winter ends. After two weeks, harden seedlings outdoors, gradually increasing exposure before planting them outside.
