Cotyledon batesii
Cotyledon batesii (Villadia batesii) is a flowering perennial succulent that can be grown in gardens and as a houseplant. Cotyledon batesii originates from Mexico and, in the wild, grows from exposed crevices in hardened areas made of lava rock. While cotyledon batesii is grown in cultivation, it is considered relatively rare in the plant market.

Water: Cotyledon batesii thrives in semi-arid conditions with minimal watering, requiring irrigation every three weeks. Its drought tolerance and preference for dry soil reduce the risk of root rot. As an evergreen, cotyledon batesii retains foliage year-round and requires less water in cooler months due to lower evapotranspiration.
Fertilize: Fertilize cotyledon batesii sparingly with balanced succulent food at quarter strength every 4-6 weeks in spring and summer. Cease in fall and winter. Ensure soil is moist before application to avoid nutrient shock. Over-fertilization can weaken cotyledon batesii and promote uneven growth.
Pruning: To maintain a beautiful shape, prune cotyledon batesii by removing dense branches in spring and fall. For propagation, cut a stout stem with 5-6 leaves, apply sulfur powder to the wound, and plant after healing in slightly moist soil.
Propagation: Succulents can be propagated using seeds, though this is challenging. More commonly, whole leaves are cut and laid on slightly humid soil during spring or fall. Provide a suitable temperature (25°C/77°F) and bright, scattered light; buds typically emerge within one to two weeks.
Repotting: Repot cotyledon batesii biennially, using a slightly larger, well-draining pot in spring. Ensure bright, indirect light and minimal water until new growth appears. The plant requires gentle care to thrive and has a rosette form that needs space to expand.
