Xerosicyos are climbing succulents endemic to Madagascar. They can be cultivated as houseplants which are quite popular for their strange appearance, characterized by perfectly round, thick, fleshy foliage. These leaves die back during prolonged periods of drought, but the plants themselves survive and are considered highly drought-tolerant.
Water:
Xerosicyos thrives in arid conditions, needing minimal water and preferring a dry climate. It should be watered approximately every two weeks to prevent over-saturation. Indoors, xerosicyos requires well-draining soil to avoid root rot caused by poor drainage or excessive watering.
Propagation:
To propagate xerosicyos, use stem cuttings or seeds. Key success factors include bright, indirect light, warm temperatures, and well-draining soil. Maintain extra humidity during root formation. For cuttings, select a healthy 4-6 inch stem, dip in rooting hormone, and keep lightly moist until roots establish.
