Is miniature Lupine poisonous to pets?
Animals that are mostly affected by miniature Lupine poisoning are sheep, cattle and horses. Cats and dogs are sensitive too, but they rarely come into contact with this plant so cases of poisoning are extremely rare among them. Different animals display different symptoms of poisoning. Certain *Lupinus *species cause bone deformation in cow offspring, which usually results in calves born with crooked legs. Sheep can develop acute respiratory failure and die if they ingest a large amount of Lupinus seeds and pods. Goats are resistant to the toxic effect of these plants. Cattle are very sensitive to the negative effects of Lupinus bicolor plants during the 40-70 days of gestation. For this reason, it is important to remove pregnant cows from grazing fields where these plants are present. General symptoms of miniature Lupine poisoning include loss of appetite, lethargy, incoordination, muscle spasms, convulsions, head pressing, jaundice, and respiratory paralysis. Poisoning can have a fatal outcome if large quantities of seeds are ingested. However, not all Lupinus species are poisonous. Cases of poisoning usually occur after the ingestion of seeds and pods of the following species: L. argentues, L. leucophyllus, L. leucopsis, and L. sericeus. Crooked calf disease is caused by L. caudatus, L. latifolius, L. laxiflorus, L. sericeus, and L. sulphureus. Miniature Lupine can be infected with a fungus Diaporthe toxica, which produces mycotoxins that cause liver toxicosis in animals if the infected plants are ingested.
