How do I get rid of black swallow-wort?
The best way to manually control black swallow-wort is to uproot it as soon as you notice it. Keep an eye out for reemerging sprouts in the area. Remove the plants at the end of spring before they produce seeds. Be very careful when hand-pulling to collect all parts of the root, and discard the vines in the garbage. If the plant has already established, it can be very difficult to remove it. Mechanical control is not a long-term solution, as black swallow-wort can regenerate and resprout from seeds and remaining parts of the root. Foliar herbicide treatment is the most effective for controlling black swallow-wort growth, especially compared to cut-stem herbicide. Fires are not recommended as the primary means of black swallow-wort control as this method can increase germination. Follow-up treatments are usually required. If you opt for herbicide use, consult an agricultural expert to find the best active substance and application method for your geographic area. Spray on a windless day to avoid drift.
