How to Grow and Care for Adlay

Adlay, also known as Coixseed, Tear grass, Adlai, Hato mugi, Yi Yi, Chinese pearl barley

Adlay is considered relatively easy to grow, thriving in a variety of soil types, though it prefers well-drained soil. A key special care point for adlay is ensuring full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. Additionally, adlay requires consistent moisture, but be cautious to avoid waterlogging which can lead to root rot. Regular watering and fertilization will support its growth, but it is generally low-maintenance and can tolerate periods of neglect.

Adlay is a robust grass with stout, fibrous stalks that can reach heights of 3 to 4 feet (90 to 120 cm). The long, narrow leaves are lance-shaped, enveloping the stem with a green to gray-green hue. Its most distinct feature is the bead-like, tear-shaped seeds enveloped in glossy, hard casings when mature. These seeds are typically a pearly white, though they can vary in color. Each seed case is roughly 0.3 to 0.5 inches (8 to 12 mm) in diameter, with a groove on one side.
